Computer is an electronic devoice which accepts instructions (Data) in the form of input and after processing it gives us information in the form of output.

What is MS Excel?

MS Excel is the spreadsheet software in Microsoft office suite. It allows you to store organize and analyze numerical and text data.

Why use spreadsheets?

Numbers are an important part of our day to day life. Almost everything that we do is in some way associate with numbers. Starting with our age, the marks we get in school, the money we earn, how much we spend, how many things we possess, what is the area of the house we live in and dates. The list can be quite endless. To get more out of these numbers one often needs to arrange them in a manner that is most convenient to read, change and understand. The best way of doing this is to arrange them in the form of table, I.e. a tabular form. A spreadsheet software is best option for tabular form.

Introduction to Spreadsheet.

In the of accounting jargon a "spread sheet" or spreadsheet was and is a large sheet of paper with columns and rows that organizes data about transactions for a business person to examine. It spreads or shows all of the costs, income, taxes, and other related data on a single sheet of paper for a manager to examine when making a decision.

A spreadsheet is a table of values arranged in rows and columns. Each value can have a predefined relationship to the other values. If you change one value, therefore, you may need to change other values as well.

Definition of Electronic Spreadsheet:

An electronic spreadsheet organizes information into software defined columns and rows. The data can then be "added up" by a formula to give a total or sum. The spreadsheet program summarizes information from many paper sources in one place and presents the information in a format to help a decision maker see the financial "big picture" for the company.

Advantages of an Electronic Spreadsheet:

  • Entering data is faster and easier.
  • Making changes is simpler.
  • Extracting meaningful information is easy.
  • Calculations on the electronic spreadsheet are almost error free, i.e. if the data entered is correct, then the result are definitely correct.
  • Electronic spreadsheets have the important facility of automatic recalculations.
  • Spreadsheets gives you facility to create a graph or chart.
  • Spreadsheets provide a large verity for data analyzing.
